Galaxies and galaxy clusters are the largest systems in the Universe held together by gravity. Their physics and evolution are not yet fully understood. Here at OAC, we focus on understanding:
- the origin and evolution of the non-thermal component (magnetic fields and relativistic particles) of clusters and its impact on the physics of cluster galaxies by analyzing the continuous radio emission in total intensity and polarization;
- the evolution of galaxies caused by interaction with the surrounding environment through observations of their stars and interstellar medium, particularly neutral hydrogen observable at radio frequencies;
- the dynamics of active galactic nuclei at the center of galaxies and their role in regulating galaxy evolution with observations at optical, X-ray, and radio wavelengths, both in continuum and line (e.g., CO, water megamasers, and OH).
