THE RADIO OF THE COSMOS 2014 – Discovering radio telescopes and the invisible Universe
Do you want to spend a week in Sardinia, discovering the invisible Universe and radio astronomy? Join “The radio of the cosmos,” a unique opportunity to gain direct experience in the world of astronomy at the Sardinia Radio Telescope, a newly constructed radio telescope, among the most advanced in the world.
With a rich and varied program, you will be introduced to major scientific topics related to astronomy, radio exploration of space, and the use of the most advanced technologies available today in this field.
You will need to find creative solutions to observe and measure microwave radiation, meet engineers, researchers, and scientists, and face all the challenges of a real astronomical mission. Besides the labs, conferences, and observations, you can enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the Sardinian landscape.
What is it about?
The 2014 summer school “The radio of the cosmos – discovering radio telescopes and the invisible Universe” is part of a scientific collaboration project between the Department of Physics of the University of Milan and the INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Cagliari (OAC), called “Development of advanced technologies in radio and microwaves” and funded under the Agreement of Collaboration in Scientific Research and Technological Innovation between the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the Lombardy Region. The school has also received the patronage of the Italian Society of Astronomy (SAIT).
The activities and lessons will be conducted by professional physicists and astrophysicists from the University of Milan and the INAF – Osservatorio Astronomico di Cagliari. Download the program of planned activities here.
Who is it for?
The summer school is open to 24 students residing in the Lombardy and Sardinia regions entering the 5th year of high school, from any type of institution.
Where does it take place?
The summer school takes place in Sardinia, in the Municipality of Selargius, a few kilometers from Cagliari, at the INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Cagliari and the Sardinia Radio Telescope (Municipality of San Basilio), in a natural and maritime setting of extraordinary beauty.
When?
The school will take place during the summer holidays, from Sunday, August 31 to Saturday, September 6, 2014.
Costs and registration
Participation in the summer school is fully supported by the organizing entities. Registration will be done by filling out an electronic participation form, available on the school’s webpage, and submitting a short video (max 3 minutes, 5 MB) or a text (max 600 words plus any images) on the theme “Me and Astronomy,” based on which the selection of participants will be conducted.
The uploaded material will be considered as a brief presentation to describe a) the candidate’s interest and motivation to participate in the summer school b) their curricular experiences (previous experiences in astronomy, courses taken…) c) how participation in the camp fits into the educational program.
The winners, declared by the indisputable judgment of the organizers, will have the opportunity to participate in the summer school with full support, which includes, in addition to the program activities and materials, accommodation, meals, transportation during the camp, and round-trip travel from Milan Malpensa.
