The topic of women’s presence in science is very relevant today. Statistics are clear: while in school, girls show the same inclination (and excellent results!) towards science as their male peers, statistically, few women manage to become researchers. Even fewer make it up the career ladder. There are certainly notable exceptions (like Fabiola Gianotti leading CERN, or astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti), but few women hold managerial or academic positions. The pyramid of women in science, which already rests on a not-so-broad base, narrows even more. To address this issue, the United Nations declared February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. And UNESCO launched the motto “The world needs science, and science needs women.” At the Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari, we believe that examples speak louder than words, so to celebrate the International Day of Women in Science, we decided to show you who the girls, the OAC ladies, are, who daily, with passion and dedication, with joy and a collaborative spirit, contribute to various astrophysical research projects in Cagliari. We do this with a self-produced video (by women, of course!), hoping that seeing our wonderful girls will inspire all those girls who dream of becoming astronauts or directors of an Astronomical Observatory. Enjoy watching! Save
