Claudio Maccone

Our dear Friend and colleague Claudio Maccone passed away last night at his home in Turin.

An internationally renowned astrophysicist and mathematician, author of over a hundred scientific publications, director for Scientific Space Exploration at the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), and until 2021, president of the Permanent SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Committee, Claudio Maccone dedicated his life to space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life.

We remember him here with the words of Andrea Melis, who had the pleasure and honor of working with Claudio for a long time.

The sorrow for this premature loss is immense for the entire scientific community, but for us in Cagliari, it is even greater. Besides being an internationally prominent figure in the field of Astronautics and a mathematical luminary, Claudio was one of the main protagonists in the challenging quest for extraterrestrial civilizations. If today our Sardinia Radio Telescope is a key player in the global SETI landscape, much of the credit for this achievement goes to him, who always believed in it.

We will treasure your teachings even more and continue on the path you showed us. Thank you for everything, Claudio!
