HPC – High Performance Computing

HPC (High Performance Computing) and storage systems for data collection and usage are available at INAF – Osservatorio Astronomico di Cagliari. This infrastructure has been funded by the National Operational Program (PON) of the Italian Ministry of University and Research to meet the ever-growing need for computing power for simulations or processing an increasing amount of experimental data, mainly from the Sardinia Radio Telescope*.

To increase computational capacity, parallel computing is used, which involves the simultaneous execution of codes on computing units that make up the processing system. First, a software algorithm must be developed that can be divided into different parts. The use of GPUs has further increased the complexity.

As computing systems evolve, software must be adapted to new architectures to achieve maximum performance. The inherent complexity and rapid technological evolution of these tools require that those who manage and use them have in-depth knowledge.

*The enhancement of the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) for studying the Universe at high radio frequencies is funded by the National Operational Program (PON) of the Italian Ministry of University and Research “Research and Innovation 2014-2020”, Notice D.D. 424 of 02/28/2018 for granting funds aimed at enhancing research infrastructures, implementing Action II.1 – Project Proposal PIR01_00010.
