Ice cores are an incredible climate archive. They contain crucial information about the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere dating back 800,000 years. Through chemical analysis, it is possible to reconstruct the climatic history of our planet, observe variations in greenhouse gas concentrations, and ultimately realize that the intense warming we are experiencing is unique since the middle of the Pleistocene epoch.
However, ice cores can also provide information about the chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols, which can be used to speculate about the role of the oceans in sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The aim of this seminar is therefore to retrace the steps that take an ice core from its extraction to its analysis, with a focus on the interesting information it contains and its climatic implications.
