Spectroscopic Redshift Surveys: past, Present, and Future

In this talk, I will retrace the history of redshift surveys, highlighting the role they have played in building our current knowledge of the Universe. I will show the main results obtained by different projects in the field of galaxy formation and evolution, with particular emphasis on surveys involving the European and Italian community. Finally, I will illustrate the main programs planned for the near future.
