Today, Monday, October 2, marks the conclusion of the second edition of the award named after Gianni Tofani, an engineer who passed away prematurely in 2015, a leading figure at the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory and Inaf. Valentina Vacca, a researcher at Inaf in Cagliari, won the 25,000 euros at stake and the stay in Australia to carry out her radio astronomy project.
A twenty-year study recently published in Nature has identified, without a doubt, that the rotation axis of the accretion disk is misaligned with the rotation axis of the supermassive black hole within the galaxy M87, leading to the precession of the jet. INAF also participated with the Medicina antennas and Sardinia Radio Telescope.
A study with authors from INAF, ASI, and the University of Cagliari on a new system for managing the electrical power supply of radio astronomical receivers has been published in IEEE Access. Thanks to Gaia, the name of the new board, it will be possible to remotely control the power on, operation, and calibration of many of the receivers with which the Sardinia Radio Telescope is equipped. No other radio telescope in the world has similar technology.
Astrophysicist Federica Govoni has been appointed by the President of the National Institute of Astrophysics to the Directorate of the Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari (Inaf-Oac) from August 1, 2023, with a renewable three-year mandate. The appointment comes at a very important historical moment for INAF in Cagliari, where, after a long phase of technological renewal, the Sardinia Radio Telescope is preparing to become fully operational again to observe the sky with world-class instruments.
May 11 and 12, 2023, two days of debates and meetings dedicated to aerospace sciences and industry in the Gallura city, with workshop activities also for schools
Please be informed that, by Presidential Decree on April 6, 2023, number 12, the selection procedures have been announced for the appointment of directors for the Institute of Radio Astronomy, based in Bologna, and the Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari of the National Institute of Astrophysics.
The president of the National Institute for Astrophysics, Marco Tavani, traveled to Sardinia to visit Italy's largest radio astronomy infrastructure in San Basilio and met with the INAF staff in Selargius.
