Spectroscopic redshift surveys: past present and future

In this talk, I will retrace the history of redshift surveys, highlighting the role they have played in building up our current knowledge of the Universe. I will show the main results obtained by the different projects in the domain of galaxy formation and evolution, with particular emphasis on surveys involving the European and Italian community. Finally I will illustrate the main programs foreseen for the near future
