SAADino: a new life for the Sardinia Aperture Array Demonstrator (SAAD)

SAAD is the acronym for "Sardinia Aperture Array Demonstrator", a project that is born to support the Italian community in testing and commissioning technologies for the SKA facility, which is now under construction in Australia. Although much effort was spent to design the Vivaldi antenna as well as to build a whole operative instrument, several reasons have prevented this demonstrator from reaching full operation.
In this talk, we'll present the current status of the project, by outlining how it has been massively re-thought and improved. Specifically, we'll focus on the so-called "SAADino", a subset of 16 Vivaldi antennas grabbed from the original (128 antennas) array. After a brief history of the SAAD project, we will present the simulations, design and implementation we have done so far for SAADino. We will also describe the path to the completion of the entire planned array of 128 antennas after the funding that was recently obtained. Finally we will address the possible future use of the instrument for small scientific projects (all-sky surveys, transients, monitoring), space debris applications, and also teaching and outreach opportunities (the "radio planetarium").
