Abstract:
Carbonaceous nanograins (containing between some tens and some hundreds of atoms) account for around 20-30% of interstellar Carbon. These grains are major actors in the thermal and chemical balance of the interstellar medium. Yet, a number of key questions remains open about their origin, their chemical properties and their interaction with the other phases of interstellar matter (i.e., gas and larger grains). The ERC-Synergy project Nanocosmos has the aim of answering some of these questions by combining astronomical observations, modelling and laboratory experiments. In my contribution, I will present how astronomical observations in the infrared and millimetre domains with Spitzer, Herschel, ALMA, NOEMA can bring new pieces to the puzzle of the formation and evolution of interstellar nanograins.
