The ERC-CoG BlackHoleWeather collaboration is developing a predictive, multi-scale view of how supermassive black holes coevolve with the hot atmospheres of massive galaxies, groups, and clusters. By combining high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic simulations with multi-wavelength observations, we investigate how turbulence, uplift, and environmental perturbations drive thermal instability and multiphase condensation in hot halos. The resulting warm filaments and cold molecular clouds form a recurrent “cosmic rain” that fuels supermassive black holes through Chaotic Cold Accretion (CCA), triggering intermittent AGN feedback and regulating the thermodynamic evolution of the surrounding atmosphere.
\nIn this colloquium I will review the main physical ingredients and observational signatures of this black-hole weather cycle, from halo-scale precipitation to the inner accretion flow. I will then highlight recent BlackHoleWeather results that bridge the often-missing meso-scale connection between kiloparsec halos and sub-parsec feeding. New high-resolution GPU simulations show that CCA can boost SMBH accretion by roughly 10-100 times over classical Bondi accretion, while naturally producing distinct weather regimes, from extended filamentary structures to compact cold cores. Across these regimes, SMBH feeding remains strongly time-variable, with order-dex flickering and pink-noise-like behavior. I Will close by discussing kinematic, multiphase, and time-domain diagnostics that can test this framework across galaxy environments and cosmic time.<\/p>\n

Massimo Gaspari is Full Professor (PO) of Astrophysics at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and PI of the ERC Consolidator Grant BlackHoleWeather. He was awarded the NASA Einstein Prize Fellowship and the Lyman Spitzer Jr. Prize Fellowship, and has held research positions at Princeton University, the Max Planck Institute, INAF, and the University of Bologna. He is author\/co-author of ~300 scientific papers on black-hole feeding and feedback, multiphase gas, and the coevolution of supermassive black holes, galaxies, groups, and clusters.
